Direct Fossil Fuel Subsidies Worldwide: Half a Trillion Dollars Annually - commentary and findings
by Culture Change / Lester Brown
19 January 2012
Here are disturbing numbers from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and World on the Edge: How to Prevent Environmental and Economic Collapse, by Lester R. Brown, and its excerpt "Governments Spend $1.4 Billion Per Day to Destabilize Climate" released by Earth Policy Institute on Jan. 19, 2012. First, Culture Change provides critical comment:

It is a public service that Worldwatch Institute founder Lester Brown, now with his Earth Policy Institute, has helped expose the huge, ongoing financial subsidies to fossil fuels industries. Governments' and corporations' persisting with this policy -- legal corruption of the worst order at a time of out-of-control climate change -- is nothing short of insane or criminal.

For a happy natural new year
by Jan Lundberg

This report includes the 90 Percent Reduction guidelines for climate protection.

Seen on the streets of Santa Cruz while biking on the first day of the new solar year:
• A confused plum tree in nearly full flower, thanks to the unusually sunny and dry December.
• Three armed guards posted outside the Bank of America having a laid-back talk.
• Only two Occupiers at their card table outside the court house, where several dozen had held forth for two months.
• Too many cars for oil reality, mostly big ones, polluting around as usual.

video of lecture: Natural Gas: a Bridge to Nowhere?
by Jan Lundberg

Jan Lundberg, independent oil industry analyst and eco-activist, spoke at the University of Oklahoma's petroleum engineering school for its Bridging Fuels for the Future Seminar Series, August 30, 2011.

Oklahoma's petroleum academia hosted this critic of the region's big hope: natural gas. In addition to upholding academic freedom, the University may have had to temper graduates' expectations of entry into lucrative jobs -- given the realities of fracking, peak oil, and climate change.

Knocking on the Devil's Door: Our Deadly Nuclear Legacy - a documentary of the greatest urgency

Image"We must outlaw nuclear reactors." - Admiral Hyman Rickover, the Father of the Nuclear Navy, to Congress in his farewell speech

Gary Null, radio talk show host and author, with Producer Richard Gale, has produced a comprehensive indictment of nuclear power and weapons. The first thing the public needs to know is that it is not merely a debate about which way to go with policy. Rather, the nuclear issue is about life and death now. So a big public service is in exposing the nuclear industry's lies that are killing people today

Many in industry and government are counting on natural gas -- especially through its less natural fracked derivation -- to propel the present industrial economy for endless growth. Besides the environmental hazards and

The Silver Bullet Men
by Chris Harries
28 July 2011
The alchemists’ dream is alive and well, just ask the blokes.

This is a story about men and their dreams -- alchemist dreams. Part science, part magic, part religion. Seriously, it’s about our common future, so listen up!

Much has been studied and written about why women love to shop. In short, this innocent pastime apparently satisfies a basic and natural instinct: to gather.
